Wood takes top MRL honor

Serrano’s Brianna Wood was named the Mojave River League girls tennis Player of the Year, while Granite Hills dominated the all-Desert Sky League selections.

Wood beat teammate Alexis Vinis, one of six Serrano first-team selections, for the MRL singles championship at the league finals. Serrano’s Tara Banta and Ashley Smaldone, who teamed up to win the league doubles title, also made the first team.

The DSL doesn’t name a Player of the Year, but the Cougars had six first-team selections plus the Coach of the Year, Pat Jenkins. Granite Hills freshman Jasmine Kimbrough went undefeated on the season and knocked off teammate and fellow freshman Alexis Mariano for the league singles title.
