Tennis Roundup 5-8-08: Sultans roll through first round

LANCASTER — The Sultana boys tennis team dominated in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division III playoffs, beating Highland 14-4 at Lancaster City Park.

Mojave River League individual champion Tanatach Foythong easily swept in singles, dropping just one game in his three sets. Trevor Gentry beat Highland’s No. 1 and No. 2 singles players. Daniel Smith and Dallin Heywood, who placed second in the league finals, also swept in doubles.

Sultana will play in the second round Saturday at noon.

CAJON 12, GRANITE HILLS 6: At Cajon, Donovan Tronshaw and Tim Kim each won two sets, but the Cougars (13-10) fell to the San Andreas League champions in their CIF-SS Div. IV first-round match.

Coach Pat Jenkins said that all 13 varsity members for Granite Hills received court time on Thursday, and he made sure that all four seniors were on the court for the final set.

A young Granite Hills squad, which finished as co-DSL champions, started the year 3-8 but won 10 straight before losing to Silverado in its final league match.

“Based on the way things started, they exceeded my expectations,” Jenkins said. “They continued to improve throughout the year.”
