Baseball Roundup 5-6-08: Sultana claims share of MRL title

HESPERIA — The Sultana baseball team pounded out 17 hits on Tuesday, routing Apple Valley 21-5 and moving a step closer to its first outright Mojave River League title.

The victory — coupled with Hesperia’s loss to Rim of the World — gives the Sultans at least a share of the MRL crown for the second straight year.

Senior shortstop Trever Haas went 5-for-6 with four RBIs, while teammate Steven Giammona hit a bases-loaded triple in the fifth and tallied four RBIs.

Sultana (8-3 MRL) will play at Apple Valley at 3 p.m. on Thursday and can win the outright title with either a victory or a Hesperia loss.

RIM OF THE WORLD 10, HESPERIA 6: At Lake Arrowhead, Adam Estrada went 3-for-4 with two RBIs but the Scorpions (6-8, 7-4 MRL) fell a game behind Sultana in the league standings with a loss to the Scots.

Hesperia faces Rim at home on Thursday and can win an MRL co-championship with a victory and a Sultana loss.

APPLE VALLEY CHRISTIAN 10, EXCELSIOR 0: At Apple Valley, pitcher Steven Messner shut out the Eagles as the Warriors (15-2, 12-0 AL) remained undefeated in Agape League play.

Messner struck out 16 and went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Sean Garibay finished the game 2-for-5 with four RBIs, and Bryce Ely was 3-for-5 with an RBI.

The Warriors will attempt to finish off an undefeated Agape League campaign when they host Antelope Valley Christian in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Friday.
