Granite Hills’ Mamo signs with Highlanders
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Granite Hills senior Robbie Mamo signed a letter of intent this week to play golf at UC Riverside in the Fall of 2009.
Mamo received a partial scholarship that will cover the cost of books and room and board. He also considered an offer from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, but felt a better balance between athletics and academics at Riverside and liked the proximity to his family in Apple Valley.
“Cal Poly’s a little higher ranked school than UCR, but for what I wanted I saw UCR as a better fit for me,” Mamo said.
Mamo, whose father is a physician, added that he wants to go into medicine after college. Mamo said he talked to a UC Riverside redshirt freshman who is balancing a pre-med curriculum with a college golf schedule and got feel for what it will be like.
Mamo will join former Granite Hills teammate B.J. Doucett, who is currently a freshman with the Highlanders.
“It gave me a little comfort,” Mamo said.
As a junior with the Cougars, Mamo advanced to the CIF SCGA Tournament and earned the Daily Press Golf Athlete of the Year. He carried a 72.3 scoring average in Desert Sky League play.
