Baseball Roundup 5-9-08: Ely’s no-hitter helps Warriors finish league play undefeated

May 9, 2008 11:57 am

APPLE VALLEY — The Apple Valley Christian baseball team swept Antelope Valley Christian in a doubleheader 26-0 and 26-1 to finish its Agape League season undefeated on Friday.

“They’ve taken advantage of the opportunities that they’ve been given,” Warriors coach Skip Ely said.

Pitcher Bryce Ely no-hit Antelope Valley Christian in the first game, and Tobbey Shoop went a perfect 7-for-7 at the plate on the day with seven RBIs, a double and a triple to lead the Warriors (17-2, 14-0 AL). Kevin Gobler was 3-for-6 with seven RBIs, and Tim Barnett was 5-for-6 with six RBIs on the day.

Last week, Apple Valley Christian clinched a league title for the first time since 1990.

“It’s been a great accomplishment for the kids,” Skip Ely said. “When you think about it, these players weren’t even born the last time the school won a title. I’m proud of them. They’re the ones playing the game, and a lot of the games haven’t been easy.”
